One of the first actions by the new Republican House majority was to establish a Select Committee to study "strategic competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party." Most Democrats supported the Republican proposal, although some Democrats objected and others who supported it had concerns, on the basis of fears that the committee would, among other things, promote xenophobia.
